Oberammergau Passion Play 2010
In 2010 the
villagers of Oberammergau will once again be
performing their world-famous Passion Play,
a tradition which stretches back over the
last 376 years. Join Saga in participating
in this remarkable experience, which takes
place only once every ten years.
The most
renowned of all Passion Plays,
Oberammergau is unique in its
conception, setting and sheer scale of
production. It is a vast undertaking
involving more than 2,000 villagers, a
full orchestra and a vast open-air
stage, set against the spectacular
backdrop of the Bavarian mountains.
The visually
spectacular, day-long performance
commemorates the last week in the life of
Christ, His journey into Jerusalem, His
death and resurrection. The Passion Play is
performed in the original German but speaks
to all nations and is made all the more
dramatic by a large choir and orchestra
performing the music specially composed for
the Play by a local teacher 190 years ago.
All the performers are amateurs who have
lived in the village for at least 20 years.
In 2010
the Play will be performed four times a
week between mid-May and the end of
September. In a departure from previous
years, the Play will take place in the
afternoon and continue through into the
evening, with a break for an included
dinner. This leaves you the morning free
to look around the charming village of
Oberammergau itself, admiring the
colourful frescoes depicting scenes from
the Bible and traditional German
fairy-tales, or shopping for the highly
regarded local wood-carvings, or perhaps
taking in a bird's-eye view of the
amazing scenery on a panoramic cable-car
ascent to the summit of Laberjoch.
Saga's programme
For the last series of performances, in the
year 2000, nearly 10,000 passengers
travelled with Saga to see the Passion Play,
and Saga hope to be able to take at least as
many again in 2010. Saga have a range of
holidays planned, from 5, 7 and 9-night
stays in Austria, Italy and Switzerland to
14-night, fully escorted coach tours, all
incorporating a 1 or 2-night stay in
Oberammergau and a ticket to the Play.
